HBO’s hit series The Last of Us will return to downtown Vancouver this weekend for additional filming.
A filming notice distributed this week to business tenants notes that production for “Mega Sword”, the working title for The Last of Us, will take over parts of the Oxford Place complex, on West Hastings between Burrard and Thurlow.
Filming will take place on the exterior south side of Guinness Tower and MNP Plaza. Production will also occupy two boardrooms at Oceanic Plaza, while the building’s parkade will be closed to tenant use on Sunday, Sept. 15 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Production is scheduled to be in the area from Friday, Sept. 13 at 5 p.m. until Monday, Sept. 16.
The post-apocalyptic series, based on the video game franchise, follows Joel, played by Pedro Pascal, who is tasked with smuggling Ellie, played by Bella Ramsey, across the United States, which has been ravaged by a zombie-esque creatures.
Production for the show’s second season was moved from Alberta to B.C. this year, with principal photography starting in February and wrapping in August. Reshoots or additional shooting for films and shows can be a regular occurrence after a production has wrapped with the main cast.
In July, the TLOU production turned parts of Vancouver’s Chinatown into post-apocalyptic Seattle, with overgrown greenery and defunct vehicles staged in and around the Pender and Columbia intersection.
One of the most expensive TV series ever, it has been reported that season one episodes, shot in Alberta in 2021-2022, cost US$10 million each. Season 1 remains available for streaming on Max.
